CodeScout Terms & Conditions

Effective date · August 21, 2026Support contact · codescoutsupport@heric.net

1. Agreement to these terms

These Terms & Conditions (“Terms”) govern your use of the CodeScout application, Apple Watch companion, website, and related features (collectively, the “Services”) provided by CodeScout (“CodeScout,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). By downloading, accessing, or using the Services, you agree to these Terms and the CodeScout Privacy Policy.

If you obtain CodeScout through Apple’s App Store, your license is also subject to Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement (“Apple Standard EULA”) unless a valid custom EULA is provided through the App Store. These Terms supplement the Apple Standard EULA. If these Terms conflict with mandatory Apple terms concerning the licensed application, the applicable Apple terms control.

If you do not agree, do not use the Services.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old and legally capable of entering into these Terms. If you are not old enough to enter into a binding agreement where you live, a parent or legal guardian must review and accept these Terms for you. CodeScout is not designed for children.

3. License

Subject to these Terms and the applicable App Store usage rules, we grant you a limited, personal, revocable, nonexclusive, nontransferable license to install and use CodeScout on Apple-branded products that you own or control.

You may not copy, redistribute, rent, lease, sell, sublicense, reverse engineer, circumvent security, extract source code, or create derivative works from the Services except where applicable law expressly permits such activity or open-source licenses provide otherwise.

The Services are licensed, not sold. We and our licensors retain all rights not expressly granted.

4. Purpose and important limitations

CodeScout is an organization, recovery, generation, mapping, and sharing utility. It is not a universal smart-home controller, security monitoring service, emergency service, locksmith service, credential recovery authority, or manufacturer support service.

In particular:

  • CodeScout can regenerate a code image only from a payload or legitimate setup information already available to you. It does not guarantee recovery of a missing random credential and will not invent or guess a pairing secret.
  • Protocol recognition and automatic suggestions may be incomplete or incorrect. You must review detected protocol, device, room, and metadata before relying on them.
  • HomeKit, Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, Bluetooth, MQTT, Home Assistant, manufacturer, and bridge capabilities vary. References to protocols or brands do not promise universal device control, telemetry, compatibility, or vendor support.
  • GPS is intended for property-level discovery. AR maps and indoor markers depend on calibration, lighting, device sensors, room changes, and relocalization; they are approximate and must not be used for safety-critical navigation.
  • Device health checks can be delayed, incomplete, unavailable, or inaccurate. Do not rely on CodeScout to monitor locks, alarms, cameras, hazards, life-safety systems, or emergencies.
  • NFC tags and printed stickers can be moved, damaged, copied, or read by others. CodeScout writes only an opaque device link to supported NFC tags, but you remain responsible for physical placement and access.

5. Your content and credentials

“Your Content” includes codes, pairing payloads, setup numbers, device information, room names, notes, photos, maps, locations, exports, Home Assistant information, and other materials you enter or import.

You retain ownership of Your Content. You grant us only the limited rights necessary to process it at your direction and provide the features you choose, such as creating an encrypted CloudKit share.

You represent that you have the right and authority to scan, store, generate, export, print, program, share, or use Your Content. You must not use CodeScout to obtain unauthorized access to a device, account, property, network, or service; to infringe intellectual-property or privacy rights; or to violate law.

Pairing credentials and network codes can provide access to physical devices or networks. You are responsible for securing your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple ID, vault passwords, exports, backups, printed materials, and NFC tags. Do not share credentials with people who should not receive them.

6. Backups, exports, and data loss

CodeScout is local-first. You are responsible for maintaining appropriate backups and verifying exports before deleting original labels, records, or manufacturer documentation.

Encrypted vault packages cannot be decrypted without the correct password. We do not receive or escrow that password and generally cannot restore it. Loss of a password, Apple ID, iCloud Keychain, device, local data, printed code, or manufacturer credential may permanently prevent recovery.

Do not destroy an original pairing label or manufacturer record solely because a copy appears in CodeScout.

7. Third-party services

The Services may interact with Apple services, iCloud/CloudKit, the App Store, StoreKit, MapKit, Apple Home, WatchConnectivity, local networks, your Home Assistant server, printers, sharing destinations, web hosting, and other third-party products. Those services are governed by their own terms and privacy policies.

We do not control and are not responsible for the availability, security, accuracy, policies, or performance of third-party services. You are responsible for complying with applicable third-party terms, network rules, device warranties, manufacturer instructions, and laws.

Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for CodeScout except as required by applicable Apple terms.

8. CodeScout Plus and purchases

CodeScout may offer a free tier and paid CodeScout Plus access through Apple in the following forms:

  • A monthly auto-renewable subscription.
  • A yearly auto-renewable subscription.
  • A one-time, non-consumable lifetime purchase for the version of the entitlement offered at purchase.

The exact product name, price, billing period, currency, trial or introductory offer, taxes, and availability shown in the App Store purchase sheet at the time of purchase control. Website examples are informational and may vary by region.

Monthly and yearly subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each billing period until canceled. Apple charges your Apple Account according to its App Store terms. You can manage or cancel a subscription in your Apple Account subscription settings. Cancellation generally takes effect at the end of the current paid period; deleting CodeScout does not automatically cancel a subscription.

Apple processes payments, refunds, billing disputes, Family Sharing eligibility, and purchase restoration under Apple’s policies. We do not receive full payment-card information. Access may change if a purchase expires, is refunded, revoked, cannot be verified, or is no longer shared with your Apple Account.

“Lifetime” means access to the corresponding CodeScout Plus non-consumable entitlement for as long as we continue to make that entitlement and compatible Services available; it does not guarantee perpetual operation, every future product, every new platform, or indefinite third-party service availability.

9. Acceptable use

You must not:

  • Use the Services unlawfully, deceptively, fraudulently, or to facilitate unauthorized access.
  • Scan, copy, distribute, or publish credentials that you do not have permission to possess or share.
  • Probe, attack, overload, disrupt, bypass, or interfere with the Services or another person’s device, network, or account.
  • Introduce malware or harmful content.
  • Misrepresent CodeScout output as manufacturer-issued, guaranteed, certified, or authoritative.
  • Remove proprietary notices or use our branding in a misleading manner.
  • Use the Services in a safety-critical system where failure could cause death, personal injury, or serious property or environmental damage.

10. Intellectual property and trademarks

CodeScout, its software, visual design, original content, icon, wordmark, and documentation are owned by CodeScout or its licensors and are protected by intellectual-property laws.

Apple, Apple Watch, App Store, iCloud, HomeKit, and related marks are trademarks of Apple Inc. Matter is associated with the Connectivity Standards Alliance. Other manufacturer, protocol, and product names belong to their respective owners. References are for compatibility and descriptive purposes and do not imply sponsorship or affiliation.

11. Feedback

If you submit ideas or feedback, you grant us a worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free right to use that feedback without restriction or compensation, provided we do not identify you publicly without permission.

12. Changes, availability, and termination

We may update, add, remove, suspend, or discontinue features to improve the Services, address security or legal requirements, respond to third-party platform changes, or manage the product. We do not guarantee that every feature, protocol, integration, price, or device will remain available.

You may stop using CodeScout at any time. You can delete local records, remove an owned encrypted CloudKit vault, revoke permissions in Apple Settings, and uninstall the app. Uninstalling does not cancel an App Store subscription.

We may terminate or restrict access where reasonably necessary for unlawful conduct, material violation of these Terms, fraud, security risk, or platform requirements. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination will survive, including ownership, payment obligations, disclaimers, limitations, indemnity, and dispute provisions.

13. Disclaimer of warranties

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITH ALL FAULTS AND WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND. WE DISCLAIM EXPRESS, IMPLIED, AND STATUTORY WARRANTIES, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, ACCURACY, RELIABILITY, AVAILABILITY, SECURITY, COMPATIBILITY, AND THAT DATA WILL NOT BE LOST.

WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT A CODE WILL PAIR A DEVICE, THAT A DEVICE WILL REMAIN ACCESSIBLE, THAT A MAP OR HEALTH RESULT IS ACCURATE, THAT AN INTEGRATION WILL CONTINUE TO WORK, OR THAT THE SERVICES WILL BE ERROR-FREE OR UNINTERRUPTED.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions, so some exclusions may not apply to you.

14. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, CodeScout AND ITS OWNERS, AFFILIATES, LICENSORS, SERVICE PROVIDERS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; LOST PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, CREDENTIALS, GOODWILL, OR OPPORTUNITY; DEVICE OR NETWORK ACCESS LOSS; PROPERTY DAMAGE; OR THE COST OF SUBSTITUTE SERVICES, ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE SERVICES.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THE SERVICES WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR CODESCOUT DURING THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM OR (B) US$50.

Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including applicable consumer rights.

15. Indemnification

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless CodeScout and its affiliates, personnel, licensors, and service providers from claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising from your unlawful use of the Services, violation of these Terms, unauthorized handling of credentials, infringement of another person’s rights, or Your Content.

16. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of [STATE/COUNTRY], without regard to conflict-of-law principles, except where the law of your residence gives you non-waivable consumer protections. Subject to those protections, the state and federal courts located in [COUNTY, STATE/COUNTRY] will have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes.

Before filing a claim, you and CodeScout agree to attempt in good faith to resolve the dispute informally for at least 30 days after written notice is received at codescoutsupport@heric.net.

This draft does not include mandatory arbitration or a class-action waiver. Add either only after receiving jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

17. Export and sanctions compliance

You may not use, export, or re-export the Services in violation of United States or other applicable export-control and sanctions laws. You represent that you are not prohibited from receiving the Services under applicable law.

18. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms. We will post the revised version at https://codescout.heric.net/terms, update the effective date, and provide additional notice when legally required. Continued use after the effective date of revised Terms constitutes acceptance where permitted by law.

19. General terms

These Terms, the Privacy Policy, and applicable Apple terms form the entire agreement concerning the Services. If a provision is unenforceable, it will be modified to the minimum extent necessary and the remaining provisions will remain effective. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them as part of a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or asset transfer.
